Measuring using a metre

W.A.L.T: Measure using a metre.

Making Sand

Sand is a significant part of the coastal environment so we had a go at making sand.  We carried out an experiment where we shook a bottle which had stones, shells and water inside.
We found out that shaking the bottle causes the rocks and shells to collide with each other causing small fragments to chip off. This is to recreate the process of erosion.

Once the bottles were well shook the small fragments of rock and shells formed sand, sank and settled on the bottom of the bottle. Very cool!

Identifying the Parts of a Narrative

W.A.L.T: Identify the parts of a Narrative

The Turtles reading group read The New House Villain today. They had to identify the setting, characters, problem and solution. They used the app ExplainEverything to show their thinking. Here is Jonathan and Gabrielle's movie.

Describing a Setting

W.A.L.T: Describe a setting

Prisha wrote this wonderful description of this setting.

By a big long field there was a dark black cave. In the cave was black gooey slime and outside the cave there were some colourful blue and yellow flowers. They were so pretty and shiny.
The grass was so green the sheep liked to walk on the grass.  They were so white.  There were also mountains with snow on them.
The blue sky was so bright and shimmering it looked like a diamond.  The birds are so black and big.  The clouds look like mashed potatoe.

Measurement

This Term in Maths we are studying Measurement (length). We will be looking at the measurement units of mm, cm, m and km.

You can assist with this at home by helping your child to:
-Use measurement language such as shorter, taller and longer
-Identify which unit of measure you would use (ie What unit would you use to measure a dictionary? Cm)
-Practise measuring items with a ruler using centimetres.

Useful websites to help with measuring length

Birds Beaks

Today we did an experiment to discover how different shaped birds beaks effect the different food that the bird eats. We tried to pick up different shaped foods with different shaped equipment. As we did this we came up with some wonderings:
  • Does the size of the birds beak effect how wide they can open their beaks?
  • Do all birds eat worms?
  • What does the shape of a birds beak have to do with the food it eats?

If you have any more wonderings about bird beaks put them in the comments.

Mussels

We saw mussels growing on the rocks at Piha. Today we had a closer look.
Here are some of our wonderings:

  • Why does a mussel have a foot?
  • Why does the mussel want to keep closing?
  • Why is a mussel hard to open?
  • What is a univalve and bivalve?
You could do some research and post your answers as a comment :)

Safe Walking

Today we had Constable Cyrus remind us again about keeping safe when crossing the road and walking down the street.
